Genre: Roots Reggae / Dub
Region: Poland, UK
Label: Scotch Bonnet Records
Release Date: July 15, 2013
The first appearance of Dreadsquad on the Scotch Bonnet imprint is a special one and demands the attention of all reggae aficionados. Unlike the recent upbeat and dancehall oriented material of Dreadsquad here we are dealing with an intimate and imaginative roots remake of Damian Marley’s and Skrillex’ smash hit “Bun Dem” minus the dubstep riffing and drilling of the original. This reverse refix (usually classic roots material is bass-boosted) works exceedingly well.
This release can be seen as an extension of Dreadsquad’s latest one-riddim album (Bun Dem Riddim) featuring the emotive cut of Everton Chambers (maybe the best selection from the record) plus a dub version only found in this collector’s 7”.The dub track reminded me of outfits like Basque Dub Foundation, Dubmatix, Long Beach Dub Allstars and especially Noiseshaper.
