Of The Trees, born Tyler Coombs, is a fresh producer in his debut EP titled Threshold, which can be downloaded for free here. Although
Tyler is just 21 years old, only in his first year of live performances he has managed to open for the “big heads” like Opiuo and Kill The Noise among others while he headlined Kahbang Festival in his hometown where also Bassnectar and Paper Diamond appeared.
Under Of The Trees’ melodic bass music banner a host of cutting-edge styles that have recently gained prominence like glitch-hop, trap and dubstep are reconfigured to interesting results. Already from the first track Tyler unleashes an array bass-heavy riddims, dubstep riffing and multi-layered melodies, which in the end dominate the tune. There is so much going in this track under Of The Trees’ heavy editing in continuous progression with numerous shifts and climaxes. Especially after the 2’50” mark the song stretches out to imaginative territories where glitch-hop and spacey bleeps take over.
Influences include primarily Phutureprimitive, An Ten Nae and Opiuo as combined with Tyler’s own emphasis on long, labyrinthine song structures and cosmic themes. “First Flight” is equally compelling with a vibrating trap bassline, laser bleeps, thick melodic timbres and dubstep stabbing. Overall there is affluent 808 percussion programming, and manifold chiptune references. I could personally do without some poppy melodies which are more simplistic than imaginative or catchy and eventually water down some parts of this EP – but still Tyler’s passion and desire for experimentation shine through all four tracks.
I think we could not ask for more from a young artist in his first step – instead we can only wish him further exploration for genuine musical achievements. You can download Threshold under a pay-what-you-want scheme at the Bandcamp page of Gravitas Recordings.
